The Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines is at the heart of the Greater Des Moines community, which includes Ames, Marshalltown, and other cities and towns in Central Iowa. The diverse efforts of individual organizations are coordinated, central fundraising is budgeted and allocated to fund community needs such as; senior assistance and support through Jewish Family Services, community supplementary education for children pre-Kindergarten through 10th grade at the Jewish Federation Community School, Jewish Community Relations Committee to monitor American-Israeli relations, interfaith relations, and antisemitism in our community, offer Engman Camp Shalom, missions to Israel, community newspaper (Des Moines Jewish Press), support for the Iowa Jewish Historical Society and and IJSLC, and Tzedakah.  Community planning and community relations activities are administered through the Federation in cooperation with community synagogues.

The Federation serves as an effective voice representing Jewish interests from a position of combined strength. The Federation is a world of action and swift response, of patient planning and programming, of legal and educational efforts-all proven and innovative means to deepen our understanding and protect our rights within Central Iowa.

Our leadership is drawn from a broad spectrum and is enhanced through the knowledge and skills of our highly professional staff. In addition to four major commissions, the Federation seeks to involve the community through the All-in-One campaign, community travel missions, planning and allocations, and leadership development.

In Israel, Federation funds help provide for health, social, and educational services for children, university and vocational students, families, the aged, and the handicapped. Our funds help to resettle new immigrants, to integrate disadvantaged families in underdeveloped areas, and to develop rural area settlements.  Through partnership 2K, we support our sister city, Akko.

Around the world, Federation funds help to bring comfort through the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to communities in 33 countries. Wherever Jews suffer from repression, JDC works behind the scenes to maintain our Jewish lifeline. Our investment here, in Israel, and throughout the world may have been expressed best by David Ben Gurion when he said that when you give to the Federation, you are giving "Not to charity but to life." YOU are the Federation.

It is through the involvement of people like you that we can meet our goal - to enrich and improve the quality of Jewish life in Des Moines, in Israel, and around the world. Please feel free to call us. We're here for YOU.

Letter From The President

We Promise...

Those of you who know me even slightly are aware of my passion for dogs. While I love all dogs, I am particularly devoted to (wild about) my own, William, our 10-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Nellie, our two-year-old West Highland White Terrier. While Will has been the companion of kings, Nellie is the Cesar commercial dog; the adorable little white dog who makes all sorts of promises. She promises to: “be there when you wake,” “to always be your co-pilot,” “to take on the world with you.” Well, my opinion is that dogs are heaven’s perfect creatures; they keep their promises, they take on the world with you, every hour of every day. They deliver. And I have learned from the loyalty and constancy of my beloved dogs that there is nothing more important than keeping a promise.
When my time as president of the Federation is ended, I pray that I will leave a legacy of trust in our word and our work, along with an understanding that the Federation keeps its promises; that we deliver. The first task that the Visioning Committee accomplished, after many weeks of work, was the creation of a new mission statement (WHAT we do) and a clear declaration of our priorities and values (WHY we do what we do).
